A very kind shopper informed me that this shield and crown brooch is a Seven Province Badge from Canada representing the following provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island.
This badge was an informal badge used between c1871-1907. This piece is done in sterling silver and designed as a heraldic shield, complete with a crown and 2 flanking griffins, and a middle grid representing each province.
This piece is quite unique and simply a spectacular find!
Measurements ~ approximately 1.25" x 1".
Dates ~ c1900.
Markings ~ signed "Sterling", as seen in pictures.
Condition ~ Excellent: pre-owned vintage/antique. With just a touch of patina in the nooks and crannies, as expected with a piece of this age, this item shows little other evidence of age or use.
